Thanks, Allan... Will try your suggestions. In the meantime, I've been
deleting freeware or demo shareware utilities that I am aware of, such as
Max Menus, Default Folder X and TinkerTool.

What folder in OS X would I look in to see _all_ the extensions that are
loading at startup that might cause problems?

Also I notice that there are five "Microsoft Database Daemons" listed in the
"Login Items" preferences pane. Some are of kind "unkown," others say
"application." A couple have what appear to be an Entourage icon, the rest
generic icons.

Do I need all five of those there? What are they doing for me?
