Except,

It won’t work with messages that have a long subject line that is split over two header lines,

It won’t work with messages prefixed by foreign language equivalents of the ‘Re’ preface,

It won’t work properly with those mailers that insert a reply count into the prefix (‘Re(2):’)

It won’t work properly where the message has a ‘fwd’ prefix,

It won’t work properly where the message has two or more bracketed sections (for (an extreme) example; “Re(3): [groupName] Re: [groupName] A new Subject [was: Fwd: [OT] My Daughter’s Cat]”)

All of which reasons, and more, is why I suggest that a scripted approach rapidly becomes over cumbersome, with too many possibilities to consider.
