If you look at the Source for Timothy's message, you will find that it
contains no "In-Reply-To" header with ID such as your own message does , and
such as mine will also:
In-Reply-To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Therefore Timothy did not click Reply, but copied and pasted in the subject
into a new message.
I'm not sure why a reply would require authentication where a new message
wouldn't, so I don't quite follow the rest of your analysis. Usually the
circumstances you specify are circumvented by _checking_ (receiving) mail
shortly before sending, not by sending non-reply messages.
It's possible there is something wrong with one of the headers when
replying. I'd try the following things; if the first doesn't fix it, move on
to the next, and so on.
1. Check the "Additional Headers" on the Options page of
Tools/Accounts/Mail/That account. Remove anything you see there.
2. Make a note of the account settings. Delete the account, and remake it
manually, without using the assistant.
3. Check with the ISP to see if SMTP authentication is required. (Settings
are in "Advanced Settings" button at the bottom of the first page of the
account window.) Or any other settings that might be required.
4. If none of that works, try an Advanced Rebuild of the database, but it
probably won't help.
5. Use the Office Remover on the CD to uninstall Office v. X (it won't touch
your data, which is safe). Empty the trash. reinstall Office, then the
10.1.2 updater from the MacTopia website.
