Another possibility that no one has mentioned yet is that you may have two accounts that are almost identical in setup. One account downloads the messages, but has a mis-configured SMTP server (or is just a corrupt account that needs to be deleted and re-setup). When you reply to messages downloaded by this account the replies will be sent via this munged account, hence the error message.
The second account is setup correctly and is your default account.
