Thank you for your help Mickey. Your second suggestion, deleting the ~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Entourage.plist file did the trick. Unfortunately, I could not try rebuilding the database, since Entourage totally ignores the option key upon startup; it just goes and loads as if I am not pressing the option key.
That is the problem now. One of these days, I'll get everything working properly so I can do some real work.
