In an attempt to fix some bad juju GUI sluggishness, and for lack of skill, I did the idiot's version of backup, and simply copied my Identity folder, burned it onto a CD, and then slashed and burned through most of my Sent and Delete folders. This looked like it removed about 5,000 emails. However, when restarted my computer, and did an Advance Rebuild of the database, it showed that it was rebuilding 20,000 emails. Yet I only had 9,000 to start with before deleting all those 5,000 emails. In other words, it should have shown that it was rebuilding 4,000 emails, not 20,000.

Until you did the Advanced Rebuild, the database still had 20,000: all the deleted ones plus all the ones you deleted earlier, since whenever (if ever) you had done an Advanced Rebuild the last time. If you ever go to newsgroups, all your news messages were part of that 20,000: I'd guess that's probably what you were seeing. Now, after an Advanced Rebuild, you really only have 4,000: the others were expunged, including al the news messages.

How do I find out where all these emails are? Is there a better way to do this slimming down process?

You can always construct a Custom View to see "All Messages", and include a Folder column. if you do news, you'll be surprised how many news messages start showing up. The bottom left hand corner of the window will show you the total: it includes all messages anywhere, including any "ghosts" with no folders caught in a half-way house. But after an Advanced Rebuild. you shouldn't have much ore than your 4000.
