Rebuilding your database won't clear the cache of news messages, which, as you've noticed, can build up *very* quickly. Unfortunately, at this time, you can only clear the cache for a news server. This is an all-or-nothing deal in that it deletes everything on that news server from your computer. You can re-download most of it depending on the server's retention rate.
Simply Control-click on the news server, then select "Empty Cache". Click OK on the prompt to delete all news messages from that server. If you then want to regain the disk space if you happen to be running low, you can do so by then doing a database rebuild. It's probably more efficient, however, to delete all caches you plan on deleting before doing the rebuild.
