I've found that something in OS X is still wonky. When things get sluggish I
run Terminal and do "top". Expand the window to see more apps, and watch the
percentages. I often see random apps using 20-40% of my CPU when they are
supposedly idle--apps like Default Folder, Word, Internet Explorer,
Entourage, Keyboard Maestro, Safari--nearly any app can be the culprit. I
quit those apps and restart them, and cpu usage drops dramatically. (I use
the freeware CeePeeYou to monitor usage constantly; it works great.)
