Well, first, you cannot change the video ram. It's soldered on the video
card. 8 MB is not enough for Quartz Extreme, and that's one of the reasons
why things are slow. It explains why the same Mac is much faster under OS 9.

As for the total RAM, 128 is not much - if you can double it, things will go
much faster. You are probably using a couple of swap files - or more - which
slows things down a lot. My old clamshell iBook had 320 MB, and it was still
relatively slow in basic operations and screen redraws.
