I really think that "wear and tear on your hard drive" is a moot point.
After all, if you _don't_ rebuild you database from time to time it gets
fragmented, slowing down access and causing even more wear and tear. And the
wear and tear on your hard drive caused by a rebuild is little more than
that which occurs when you copy a file from one location to another.
