Earthlink doesn't perform return-path verification, so the email address you use makes no difference in this scenario. In your specific case, Allen, the only thing you have to worry about is Earthlink's port 25 blocking.

These are read from bottom to top. The IP address your machine had, at the time the message was sent, was 68.166.14.22, which, if we perform a whois on:
whois –h whois.arin.net 68.166.14.22
Looks like an IP address owned by Covad Communications. If your ISP is indeed Earthlink, then they are apparently contracting out IP addresses from Covad in your area and may not have as much control with firewalling those IP addresses.
The bottom line is...running a local SMTP server appears to work for you at your present location. I just wouldn't expect it to work everywhere...
