Sounds like a memory error if I remember correctly. He also needs double
space of his identity. It also needs to be contiguous.

Mail is not backwards compatible.

Did he make a copy? He can try the ones created by OE named "old" ("Old
Database Cache", "Old Database", and "Old Messages."). Just remove the word
"old" and you should be back with your original. Obviously, put in a
different folder so they don't overwrite.
