Right, I was generally aware of packet sniffing techniques and I've already collected a folder full of information on them. It's great that two different MVPs have provided support this method. > > This will give you the entire SMTP transaction between your machine and the > SMTP server. Yeah, since I've got packets going back and forth all the time, listening to Internet radio and auto-checking email over DSL every few minutes, I need to be careful about proper settings and procedures, or I'm going to get overwhelmed quickly. The question was how to get Entourage itself to divulge more about the error code it is getting. The reason I've avoided packet-sniffing thus far is that it seems like a lot of trouble to find out information that apps such as Entourage clearly already know. Now I recall: there's an Entourage error log... (Referring to Entourage Help "About the Error Log") But it is empty. Since I haven't restarted Entourage since the errors occurred yesterday, this would indicated that some email server errors don't get logged. (Is the little error indicator triangle at the lower right of the Mail window gone in Entourage 2004?) OK, so next time this issue comes up, I'm going to look beyond the error dialog and check Window-->Error Log. If it does not reflect the current issue, I'm going to send in a suggestion to Entourage Feedback. All errors should be logged, both transient errors and those important enough to generate an error dialog sequence.
