John, as Barry explained, it's a security feature. It's actually a huge,
important thing in today's web world. I strongly recommend you keep this
setting. Why? Because it defends you from "web bugs." Here's what that is,
in quick terms. Others may wish to elaborate or correct what I write in
haste here.

Scummy people put a tiny 1x1 image into an html email. That image is named
or coded somehow to be associated just for your email address. You come
along and view that email. The html of the email calls to their web server
just like what happens in a web browser. When your email app calls for that
image the scum (aka spammer) knows your email address is valid. Now he sells
your address and your spam increases.

Ah, but you have the junk mail feature on and it catches your spam, right?
Yes, it does. But if you're careful, you scroll thru that folder before
deleting that stuff. While in there say you click a message to start
selecting stuff for deletion. Now you've verified your address. That is,
unless you kept the setting that does not download the images until you
choose to.

And there's another reason to keep the default. Say you get a bunch of
email, some of it things like image-heavy ads from compusa or buy.com.
You're interested in them but first you want to get to your business mail or
things from friends. As you view and delete you come to view one of those
messages. If that setting is off you must wait for the images to download.
If on, you can do your other mail fast. Then, later you can look at this
stuff and grab the images.

It's really a great feature. I was thrilled to see it here. Apple's mail app
has it to, by the way.

Hope this helps.
