I'll try to help you get your backup database going, but don't throw away the one you are having problems with; it may be we can rescue it.
Your Entourage data is in a subfolder of your Documents folder (the one in your Home folder, symbolized by "~": ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2001 Identities/identity-name Where "identity-name" may be "Main Identity" or whatever you called your main identity. Within that folder are all your mail, contacts, etc, in a database file. Move that whole identity folder someplace else, like the Desktop, and try launching Entourage. It should open up in a new, empty identity. To access your backup folder, find where you stashed it and copy the equivalent identity folder back into "Office 2001 Identities", renaming it if necessary, and then use the Switch Identity command on the main Entourage menu to switch to it.
