Apple's developer guidelines say differently ;-)
With the exception of the ~/Library directory, your application
should never install files into the user's home directory. In
particular, you should never install files into a user's Documents
directory or into the /Users/Shared directory. These directories
should only be modified by the user.
Apple itself follows these guidelines (for the most part) by placing a good
deal of MUD-like data in ~/Library rather than ~/Documents: Mail, Safari
bookmarks, and so on.
Even apart from that, I have to disagree that ~/Library isn't a valid place
for a user's data. The entire home directory is for user data, subdivided
into different directories for different types of data. The real debate is
over *which* user data belongs in ~/Library vs. ~/Documents ;-) But given
Apple's guidelines, it would be quite reasonable for the MUD folder to be
located in ~/Library/Application Support/[Entourage or Microsoft Office].
As a side note, although I can empathize with the "ease of backup" argument,
I think it's dangerous for users to think that by backing up just
~/Documents, they're getting their "important" data. If you back up only
~/Documents, or if you tell a user to back up only that directory, much
important data could to be lost if something bad ever happens.
