Aha...now I've got it.

    M/S AutoUpdate is the name of the M/S application.

    Launch it and it says:  <How would you like to CHECK for software
updates?>

    On my Mac, I have <Manually> checked.

    On Julie's Mac, <Automatically> was checked.

    I assumed that it would automatically CHECK for software, not
automatically DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL software.

    Live and learn...and uncheck the box <Automatically>
