Perhaps the real problem is that the docs that come with the program(s)
don't make this clear enough to a Mac user, who has never had to worry
before about relocating folders and files at will. It surprised me how many
Office users I know reported having encountered this problem before and how
quickly they conceded that the data was lost forever.
Many applications will do that. Move or rename the ~/Library/Mail folder
and Mail.app will lose track of all of its mail. Move or rename the
~/Documents/Palm folder and Palm Desktop will lose track of all of its
data. Move or rename the ~/Pictures/iPhoto folder and iPhoto will "lose"
all of your photos. The examples are too numerous to list. Really, in OS
X, one shouldn't mess with the base folder structure. Your home folder
is populated with certain folders...leave them alone. Those folders are
populated by folders that were placed there by various apps...leave them
alone. Folders you create are yours to mangle at will, but leave app
folders alone.
