I don't like being told where I need to store my files.

Why ever not? You thinks it interferes with your free speech right under the US Constitution or something like that? What's wrong with just adapting to
whatever makes things work?

It's completely reasonable to want to have control over your home directory, especially something like the documents folder. Programs should work for users, not the other way around. We should never accept "almost good enough" in the computer world. It can be "good enough". Thats why we're using Mac OS in the first place, right?

If it is imperative
to an apps operation that its data folders be in a certain spot, put them
somewhere, where the user will not likely move them.

Now that's a better way to look at it. As I said,, when MS started doing this, they were the only ones, there was no better place. Apple had only
just created an official "blessed" Documents folder in OS 9. The only
alternative would have been somewhere in the System Folder - worse idea.

OS 9 discussions are irrelevant. We're using OS X, and have been for years. As for developers putting files in smart places, well thats the whole point here right. The only question of where preferences or user data should live is does it need to be in the home directory or can it be in slash. Quite frankly its dangerous to put such application critical preferences in a folder where the typical user is likely to be storing files and moving data in / out.

Now that OS X has a Library folder within the user folder, where most users don't venture much, and an Application Support folder within that, it looks like a good place. It would be a very big change to how Office works to do this (and will surely upset lots of people used to the present setup) so don't expect it for any sort of dot update. It might be something they could
think about for a major version. Time will tell.

OS X has always had a Library folder in the user home. Application support has been there as far back as I can remember, definitely since 10.2. Big change for how office works? Well it would mean changing the code to specify the new folder but other than that, as long as the MUD stays in the user home, what would it change?

Defiently don't expect any sort of update, but don't be an apologist. This is exactly the place to air out these kind of gripes.
