I travel a fair amount and find that I either have to have a separate
account set up for use on the road, or else I need to change the
settings for outgoing mail server.
An example: when I am at home, connected via Earthlink.net, my
outgoing mail setting is smtp.earthlink.net, with no authentication
needed (I'm a logged-in Earthlink user). However, if I am connected at
a hotel via their wireless network, I'm not logged in to Earthlink. If
I try to send mail to smtp.earthlink.net, it will be rejected because
I'm not a logged-in user, and I am connecting ("relaying") from
another server.
To send mail under those circumstances, I need to change the outgoing
settings to "Requires authentication", and check the box that says
something like "Use same username and password as for receiving mail".
I can either switch these setting back and forth as needed, or I can
set up two accounts, one set for home use, one for on the road.

If I understand the problem correctly, he needs to set up an smtp account
(at smtp.com - 9.99/month) - very easy. Then he goes into his account
settings and changes outgoing to "smtp.com" and clicks on "options" to make
"smtp authentication" valid (or similar) - the smtp web site explains all of
this really well - takes 10 mins to get up and running.
Common problem when operating remotely that you cannot send, but can
receive. It took me ages to work out.
