I had this problem with Curlz MT for ages...all my alerts would display in this hardly-readable font. The only way I could fix this was to exile that font from my computer entirely...which meant removing from all three libraries or folders where it was stored. I can no longer remember where, just that this was the only fix

You might just want to disable the font by moving the font out /System Folder/Fonts/ and then re-launching the application. For some reason, some applications mistakenly use Curlz MT rather than more legible fonts.
