I'm still at v11.0.0. I tried to use the updater (elp > Check for Updates)
to go to 11.3, but the updater froze and wouldn't go anywhere -- hence my
question in the first mail about whether I have to download updates manually
and apply them in a particular order, or whether I can apply just 11.3.

Just as trying with a New User on my Mac, the shift h works just fine in a
new Identity, too.

I have both compacted the database (about 2 hours), and then a day later,
went through the repair process. The repair took five hours, most of it with
the "copying information into new database" message displayed, and did not
fix the lack of Shift h problem. (See the bullet points at the bottom of the
first message in this thread for a complete list of things I've tried.)

Thanks, though! Please keep the ideas coming. I'll try anything.
