But Jane says that "HTML is turned off". The "Replace straight quotes with
smart quotes" autocorrect option is functional only in HTML mail, so that
can't be it.* And, in any case, Barry, you're wrong about that: having curly
quotes ("smart quotes") triggers ISO-8859-1, not Unicode. That doesn't bring
up the Unicode alert.
So it's got to be something else. Some of the other autocorrect options (the
horizontal line option in particular) might trigger Unicode, but, again,
only in HTML mail. So Jane must be including some other non-MacRoman
character.
In any case, virtually all common email readers on both platforms now handle
Unicode just fine. So unless you suspect that your recipient may be using an
ancient email program, don't be concerned about the Unicode alert and just
send the message.
