Didtheyreadit.com claims to be more reliable than return receipts because
return receipts aren't supported by all receiving mail clients. However, in
truth, didtheyreadit.com isn't much more reliable.

They use web bugs to do their tracking. This means that they insert an HTML
<IMG> tag referencing a unique image on their servers. When the recipient
receives the message, they view it and, in theory, automatically download
the tracking image.

The problem is that more and more email clients (including webmail services
like Yahoo) block external images in messages. So didtheyreadit.com's
services is just as unreliable as return receipts.
