Try sorting or selecting (by date range) portions of a folder with many emails that span considerable time. If the results are wacky, which I suspect they may be, this signals a database in need of rebuilding. I had the same problem and, ultimately, had to carry out the second, more comprehensive, "rebuilt" at startup (hold down Option key when launching).
