Last September, I posted that the "Not Enough Memory" error message can be easily triggered by using a font management program such as Suitcase to remove a font that Entourage needs to display a message.
Considering the OP eventually mentioned design packages such as QuarkXpress, it would be no surprise to find a font manager utility floating around in there.
