There will be many more proposals like this in coming years on the
East Coast, in particular. The mega-wind farms want to get at that
"cheap" public land and the good wind generating sites in the
Appalachians. It's sad that the centralized model of power production
- big projects with long transimission lines - still holds sway. They
are so much more destructive and inefficient than distributed
networks. I've heard figures that up to 40% of electricity is lost
during transimission from power lines and the longer the line, the
more the loss. Just about every neighborhood could have it's own
renewable energy project(s) of choice, with shorther transmission
lines and less environmental destruction. Some how we, as a society,
have not gotten over centralized power of all types.
