I've been lurking here for a while and saying nothing, as I'm young, inexperienced, and can contribute little...but this is something I CAN say something interesting about. I have a number of relatives who work in the power industry, and they all complain that the whole eastern power grid (the U.S. & Canada on this side of the Rockies) is very vulnerable to power outages. Because of these huge, centralized, and widely distributed power plants, and the very few transmission lines having to span vast distances, the loss of just a few of the big lines could bring the whole system crashing down. Massive centralized power has the whole grid engaged in a perilous tightrope act. Even aside from the damage to ecosystems, the whole system is doubleplusungood.
