Thanks for the offer, I was hoping you would ask. I am retired so almost any
day is good for me. I heard about a large tulip tree in Stanley Park in
Westfield but I haven't found it yet. They have a hike on 4/25 in Stanley Park
called "Buried Past. We took it last year but I didn't know about tulip trees
at the time so I didn't ask about them. We did see 2 maple trees called His and
Hers. I will ask about tulip trees this time. Sam

Thanks Sam, I'll try to get out there when I get back from CA. Would you like
to join me?

Gary et al, I am posting the coordinates to the tree I measured. N42 01.172
W72 48.842. From the parking area on Mort Vining RD head straight back past the
gate on the white blazed trail about .3 miles, when the trail splits follow the
yellow blazed trail. As you go along you will start seeing tulip trees on the
side of the trail. I counted at least 10 of them. I one I measured is a little
way off the trail behind a vernal pool. Expect water, mud, stones, roots and
ticks along the trail. I will be going to the NW corner of the preserve in a
few days and keep my eyes open for more tulip trees. Sam

Sam et al,

I have been doing work in GRANVILLE but not yet in Southwick. Sounds like I
ought to check this site out with my buddy Bob Leverett when I get back from
California. I also have a site of mature tulip trees to check out in Westfield
and perhaps the largest volume tulip tree forest grown is but two miles from my
house on Montgomery Road in Westfield.
Thank you.

Gary

Hi, While hiking in the preserve I saw a number of tulip trees. I measured one
at 4.5 feet around at 4 feet off the ground. I know this is not in the size
range of those at Robinson State Park but I haven't found anything on the web
about Southwick. Has this area been checked? Thanks Sam Goodwin
