I third Joe's point at least as far as Massachusetts is concerned. The abysmal performance of DCR over the past year has torpedoed any hopes that Massachusetts public forests would serve as examples for the private sector. The news from Mass these days is not good. Anyone who spends a majority of their time in the woods on public land....which many in ENTS do in pursuits such as walking, hiking or measuring trees, it can become fairly easy to develop a warped sense of expectations in terms of the health, status or even quality of forest management practices that take place on private land where most people never tread. I also agree with Joe about the woefully small number of people in the forestry profession that "get it".... and the worn out condition of those that do.
