I remember my neighbors painted their Chinese magnolia trees white as
well for bug protection.  There have been some studies (cannot site
right off) regarding the application of latex paint to trunks may reduce
sunscald in some species of ornamentals.  Not sure if anything
conclusive has been determined though.

in the front yard that where painted white from the ground till about 6
feet up.

insects.
