Love it that you're not afraid to get down and dirty, as that's a part of what 
we in the field would say Forest Ecology involves.  But be patient, there are 
forum members that have spent years preparing to become forest 
ecologists...it's a deep subject, and a week long forest ecology class would 
have to be 'broad-brushed'. Hopefully the class doesn't ruin you for more!
