i have a couple of comments:

I would guess that the accelerometer in the iphone has an "accuracy"
level that exceeds +/- 5 degrees. low cost accelerometers are
inherently inaccurate. i can't believe Apple would put a device in a
phone that would cost more than the phone.

keeping the clinometer alligned with the rangefinder is critical. you
may wish to add a small pencil laser to the joined pair for
allignment. they aren't big and if it's close and not too bright, you
shoudl be able to see the laser beam.

on the other hand, using our Hypsometer would resolve the situation
<grin>.
