Will, ENTS,
I had a chance to visit the McCarrihan Sycamore this week and here are
the results:
CBH is at 307.5" or 25.6 ' with moss
Ht. is at 114.2'
CS is at 106'
Tree is solid and with a full healthy crown.
Which would give it a Big Tree Point total of 447. Definitely the
biggest tree I have ever measured here in the east.
Coordinates N 39 57.489, W 80 32.796
The tree is located in Marshall County WV on the private property of
Mr. McCarrihan who just celebrated his 80th birthday. Mr. McCarrihan
drove me to and fro from his home in Moundsville two different ways
while keeping up a running commentary of the local spots of interest
and local history so after I got home i have had to reconstuct where
we had travelled.I think we forded various creeks four times, but
there are better acces roads then we took. The tree is located between
Viola and Majorsville east of Moundsville and on Cold Springs Road or
CR 15 (Delorme says it CR 15/1). Tree is located adjacent to the road
and somewhat leaning out over it. It is on bottomland formed by
Wheeling Creek. Almost all the bottomland had been cleared in the past
with a scattering of bigger trees remaining.
The foliage on this tree and surrounding trees was fully intact so I
do plan to go back after leaf fall to make sure I have captured the
full dimensions. There is also a thick build up of moss and one side
of the tree and even though I pressed the tape as deep as I could the
I did not adjust my measurements to account for this. May have
overstated the CBH 3 inches at the most.
Sorry Randy I could not give your more notice of my visit but Mr.
McCarrihan is having back surgery this coming week and really wanted
someone to visit asap.
If in the area the New Vrindaban Palce of Gold is nearby and is worth
of a visit. We did not pay the $6 tour charge for the inner temple but
strolled through the temple grounds in amazing Rose garden and also a
vegetable garden which helps keep these Buddhist's in residence on
their diet.
