Jenny,
I've hiked about half of the trail from Alder Lake to Basalm Lake
Mountain, coming from the Alder Lake end... I couldn't say if I saw
old growth but a lot of the forest higher up sure looked like it!  So
far it's been one of my favorite places in the Catskills and it's
pretty far from the more crowded Hunter Mountain area.  I'd guess
you'd be by yourself there on a weekday, hardly more on the weekends
this time of year.  A bonus along the trail are a few active beaver
