Carolyn,

Thanks. Glad you weighed in. I hadn't thought of hunting season. I wonder if
Jennifer would run into hunters on the Giant Ledge Trail. I usually see hunters
in lower elevations and in less steep terrain. Maybe the Catskills are
different. Is that the case?

In terms of maps, with Google Maps available, producing a neat terrain map with
roads on it is a cinch. Monica and I hope to visit you in the southern
Catskills. It will likely be spring, if you'll be around.

Fellow Catskill trekkers,

Actually, Bob, you know the old growth better than I do. When I get a break
from my own place, I will definitely want to consult your map. What I will
offer Jenny is some very serious advice. Saturday is the opening day of big
game season. You are literally taking your life in your hands to walk in the
woods on the first day. If you still want to go, wear BLAZE ORANGE. Screaming
blaze orange. And absolutely, positively, no white gloves. Maybe also no white
doves.

Seriously,

Carolyn

Bob,

Thanks for that map. I'm making my plan. And when I go I plan on being an
eco-terrorist and finding a fossil. I got a great rock pic. Plus I need some
good rocks for pigeon perching. They love them. But they also poop on them. I
don't think John Muir would mind this too much.

Trying to fit your wilderness definition in the essay into an urban
environment. What constitutes wilderness on 22nd st and 7th ave.? It's pretty
interesting stuff....

Thanks!

Jenny

Bob,

Great! Medium distance (10 miles round trip - is that medium/!) Moderate
elevation gain. Looking for old growth. Any water or vista is a bonus, but not
necessary. A place off the beaten track would be ideal Encountering no people
is pretty much heaven (unless I'm hiking with them!)

And, above all, I want to hear chickadees (although I know I can go see and
hear them in the Bronx at NYBG...but it's not the same..)

Jenny,

How much hiking do you want to do? Distance? Elevation gain? Big panoramas?
Waterfalls? Old growth forests? Four-thousand footers? The possibilities are
endless. If you recall, I have posted many Catskill images. The Catskills are
one of Monica's and my favorite places. I can suggest many places depending on
your particular preferences. Also, Carolyn Summers lives in the southern
Catskills. If she's still reading the emails, I'm sure she'll also make
suggestions.

Subject: [ENTS] Catskills Recommendations?

ENTS,

I am going to find a car, get in it and drive 2 hours to the
Catskills. Weirdly, I don't know them very well. I've got great maps
but just need some ideas of spots to visit. I have plenty of guide
books too, but just wanted to check in here first before taking off.

Alternatively I could visit the Shawangunks, which are to the south.

I've been to the Hudson Highlands, Black Rock Forest, and to Harriman
State Park, and Bear Mt. State Park so I wanted to go a little further
afield.

Any ideas come to mind? I'm sure I've seen recommendations before, by
hopefully you won't mind writing again.

Thanks! Jenny (and Thompson and Otto and Trina, my feathered dove
patients, who will be joining me in the car and a motel! Although,
they are slightly wary of going to a place called "Cat Skills". But I
promised to bring lots of Roadrunner cartoons. As you can imagine,
they love those.)
