Tom,
Fine job! Thanks from all of us. If there is an eastern state with great potential that suffers from lack of coverage, it is New York. The sky is the limit in the Empire State. We have so needed better NY coverage. We are thrilled that you and Robert are picking up some of the need. I remember the black cherry at Lily Dale, the black locust at Old Maid's Woods, the white ash at Kaaterskill Falls, and several of the Zoar Valley trees. What a revelation Zoar Valley was (and still is). As a contribution to the list , the South Taconic Park area near NY's border with Massachusetts and near Bash Bish Falls has a Norway spruce that is 121.0 ft tall and 8.0 feet in girth. I know the NS is not a native species, but quite a few of us like it and keep records on it.. There is a second Norway close by that measurers 120.5 ft x 8.6 ft, and a third Norway that measures 120 ft x 7.8 ft. On my next visit, I'll complete the sample. The same area has a Douglas fir that is 122.0 x 6.9. I think it is the Rocky Mountain Doug fir, the same species as Jennifer Dudley's tree. As a runner up on the sugar maple (never hurts to have several), the Vanderbilt Estate at Hyde Park has a 125.0-ft specimen. My records show 125.0 x 9.2. A group of us measured the maple quite a few years ago. It needs to be revisited. Also, there is a tuliptree there that was at the time around 154 feet. It may now be the state's tallest tuliptree. It is growing on a good site.
