Bob, Bigtooth aspen does not reach its maximum dimensions in the southern part of its range, but I think the reasons are different than for cherry. Both black cherry and white ash are widespread in the southeastern piedmont and southern Appalachians, and occur on a wide variety of sites. In contrast, bigtooth aspen is rare in the southeast, so we don't have any examples growing on unusually good soils or we sheltered sites.
