Marc,
The Pinchot has a larger diameter, but a shorter trunk. The Pinchot's girth is 27.8 ft. Its height is 100.4 feet. The Sunderland is 25.0 feet and its height is 110 feet. The crown spreads are approximately the same. On a big tree point bassis, the Pinchot is the winner. On total volume, it is neck and neck between the two trees. Will Blozan slightly favors the Sunderland. Bob Van Pelt has seen them both. I don't know which one he favors. NY, PA, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois have sycamores that are as large to slightly larger than the two New England trees. I don't know where the idea came from that the Sunderland is the largest sycamore in the East, but once something a statement like that is made and gets into print, it has a life of its own. We have to move mountains to get accurate descriptions to the top. My schedule should be light through most of the winter months. I'll make it over there. I thought at one time you had stated that Sunderland is larger after you had modeled it? When are you coming out to my parts I really want to show off the oak to you.
