ENTS:

I have made a point of remeasuring all of the 120'+ eastern hemlocks I
know of in Western Massachusetts. As I do so, I am trying to record
with drawings and maps the exact location of the trees, so they can be
tracked over time.

On a recent trip to Black Brook in Savoy, I was able to recover the 2
I had in my records: the old MTSF champ (was 130'+) lost some top
over the winter, and currently measures 123.9'h x 11.7'c. I have been
re-taking the cbh at 4.5' above the midpoint of the upper and lower
basal planes. In most cases where I have old pins I am finding them
to be above the new 4.5' point. In the case of this tree, the pin was
at 5.7', where the girth was 11.2'. A second tree at the opposite
bank and downstream from the first measured 122.8' x 9.0'. There were
at least 6 more hemlocks between 110' and 120', and one more fat one
at 109.2'h x 11.5'c. The two fat trees are among the largest girth
hemlocks in Mohawk Trail State Forest.

The same day I stopped at the entrance parking lot on route 2 and
remeasured two more: One is by a split rock and measures 124.9' x
7.9', and a second almost at the road measures 127.5' x 8.1'. The
latter tree is now the tallest I have records for in MTSF, but I'll
keep looking!
