Eli,

What laser do you have? I would love to meet up and explore the site this
winter. Atlanta isn't terribly far for me.

I thought this might catch some attention!

I have a digital clinometer that automatically calculates the angles and
gives height read-outs. It was very close to my laser readings, but I'd
love to go out with a seasoned ETNS who can demonstrate use of a clinometer
and the "Sine method". Are there any other ENTS near Atlanta? I'd love to
plan a more formalized outing to Fernbank Forest.

Also note that there were many other species on site including other oaks
and a few hickory species to name a few, but I was really focusing on the
few I was confident on for this trip. Still working on my winter ID skills
too...

!

A return with clinometer is very, very justified! I was there ~ 20 years ago
and was floored by it then. Sounds like some great potential. The white and
red oaks are amazing. The post oak is among the tallest reported.

oops... here's the data....

Some of you (Jess Riddle in particular) may know about the 67 acre parcel of
old growth in the city limits of Atlanta known as Fernbank Forest . I
happen to work at Fernbank Museum and have had the opportunity to do more
exploring in our forest as of late with my newly acquired laser rangefinder.
Here's brief report from my 7 hour excursion last friday and note that all
height measurements are NLT from laser shots straight up into the canopy for
this preliminary forest trip:

Liriodendron tulipifera 153'

Liriodendron tulipifera 151.5' x 10.5' CBH

Liriodendron tulipifera 150' x 11.0'

Liriodendron tulipifera 144' x 12.3'

Liriodendron tulipifera 142.5 x 12.9'

Liriodendron tulipifera 138' x 13'

Liriodendron tulipifera 144' x 13.75'

Fraxinus americana 116' x 8.75'

Acer saccharinum 100' x 14.8' CBH (2 trunks?)

Fagus grandifolia 114' x 8.3'

Liquidambar styraciflua 126'

Pinus echinata 123' x 6.71'

Pinus Taeda 142' x 9.0'

Pinus Taeda 138' x 9.42'

Quercus alba 138'

Quercus rubra 140'

Quercus stellata 100'

Tsuga canadensis 99' (this was probably planted)

Prunus serotina 108' x 7.58'

-------------------------------------------

Rucker (10) index = 127'
