Jack,

Thanks. Your data constitute the only reliable measurements of the cathedral
Pines.

Dear Ed,
Here are the numbers that I have on Cathedral Pines in Cornwall, CT. These were
done with a transit (in January 1978) so they should be pretty accurate but
because it took so long for each, I only have a few measurements. There may
have been taller ones but I am usually pretty good at picking out the tallest.
I include images from scanned slides. One is a view along the road (where the
measuring is easy) showing 150-160 footers . The other is the base of the 172
footer near the center of the stand.
White Pine:
? cir. 172.6' high
9'-4" cir. 165.5' high
9'-11" cir. 160.2' high
8'-4" cir. 148' high
Hemlock:
8'-10" cir. 123' high

Jack,

I am wondering if you have your records of the trees you measured in the
Cathedral Pines with your transit before the blow-down? If so I would really
like to see a listing of the old measurements. Do you have, or does anyone else
on the list have any photos of the site prior to the wind damage?
