Marc,

Alas, the Cathedral Pines of Cornwal, CT are no more. They blew down in July
1989. Real bummer. There weren't as many 150s in the stand as there are now in
Mohawk, but at least one pine in the Cathedral stand was 172 feet, per Jack's
highly accurate measurement. The oldest of the cathedral pines slightly
exceeded 300 years. Most were around 220, I believe, when they blew down.

Most of Mohawk's 150-foot white pines have reached their heights at younger
ages than the Cathedral Pines. Hopefully, Mohawk's tall trees will continue
their upward growth for a long time.

I am late to this post! That must have been something to see those giants. How
does this site compare to Mohawk? Is the terrain similar, flat or a floodplain
with rich nutrient based soils? If these trees were young and reached these
lofty heights maybe "Spruce’s" post "White pine growth rates--something of
interest about growth possibilities" could be in the realm of possibility? On

One shows virtually the same view as my earlier set along the road after the
tornado went through. The other is a trailside pine near the upper end with a
couple of well known 6' timberframers for scale. > Jack > >
