Larry, I figured as much. A collection of easy to catch, tender-breasted doves like that presents quite a tempting buffet to a bird of prey!!
By the way, if you like the Dairyland area of Douglas County in northwestern Wisconsin, you might like the book "Keepers of the Wolves" by Richard Thiel that discusses the early years of the timber wolf recovery in Wisconsin and spends most of it's time on the roads around there and the Douglas County Forest in that area where you were last month.
