Steve-

Any guesses on my mystery tree (WNTS Trip Report- Sierra Nevada Range - Western
Juniper just released)?

ENTS, Don, Marc-

Brewer spruce and mountain hemlock are both pretty obscure ornamentals for the
Midwest---I brought them home when I owned a garden center(in a previous life).
Brewer spruce is quite distinct when seen in person, with needles much longer
than most spruce. Marc, the mountain hemlock does very well here, but is
exceedingly slow growing, while not dwarf. The tree in the photo was planted
16-18 years ago. It is a variety named "Mt. Hood", with foliage more glaucous
than the species, although not apparent in the winter. The Thuja plicata is a
variety named "virescens", with finer textured, more yellow-green foliage than
the species. Several Thuja plicata varieties have become popular over the last
10 years due to their resistance to deer browse.

Yep, peg-like stipules, though fainter than some of the other species.

Here is a branchlet detail from the first species.

Would have liked to have zoomed in on the branchlettes...couldn't tell if I was
seeing peg-like stipules.
My guesses for the trio are:
Tsuga heterophylla
Tsuga mertensiana
Juniperus occidentalis
Nice yard!

ENTS-

Here are photos of three North American, but not eastern, native conifers, each
from a different genus. Photos 1&2, 3&4, and 5&6 go together. The first one is
about 6' in height, the second about 14', and the third about 7'. All are
growing in my yard in N Ohio. Any guesses?
