Don & Steve, Abies lasiocarpa grows in California naturally only in very limited areas in Salmon and Marble Mountains (Source: Lanner (1999): Conifers of California) and its growing habit is much narrower. I think the fir in Don's beautiful and informative juniper story is Abies magnifica.
There are several images with possible Pinus albicaulis. The tree in the right in the figures 2 and 7; maybe the shrub on the foreground in the figure 11.
