Out of my moderate arsenal of lenses, both my 28/2.8 and 50/1.4 exhibit 
this "rough coupling", and maybe my 85/1.8 to a lesser extent as 
well.  What you are probably feeling is the contacts rubbing against each 
other because the interface between the lens and the body is so tight.  I 
wouldn't worry about it.

With re: to the focus ring, to compare two relatively similar lenses, the 
50/1.4 does indeed have a focus ring with less resistance than the 
85/1.8.  Overall, the 50/1.4 subjectively "feels" cheaper than the 85/1.8.
