I know you have received other reports to the contrary but my experience with the 
50/1.4 is exactly as you describe. I have a lot of Canon lenses... USM, non-USM and 
L-series and the 50/1.4 does feel different. If I recall, it is USM but not "ring 
USM".  On mine the focus ring does feel gritty and a tad loose compared with other 
lenses. I was concerned about this when I bought the lens and I was assured that it is 
normal and due to the non-ring USM motor.  Despite the strange feel of the focus ring, 
the lenses works wonderfully. I think your's is fine.
