An ad in today's paper in Cleveland, OH has the Elan 7 body at $479.

Was this a real camera store or a mall store? I have found that, in my
area at least, sales clerks are just that, clerks. Those that are
knowledgeable are few and far between.
Then where I live, Canon is the "red haired stepchild" compared to
Nikon. This is another problem here anyway.

The second body idea sounds good to me. Many times an item is worth
more to the owner as a backup than it is to a potential buyer.

It has been quite a while since I worked in a camera shop, but when I
did a used piece of current equipment sold for about 75% of new. You
have to figure the dealers mark them up to about that price so trade-in
ran about 50% of current new price.
Then there is eBay.....
