The 100-300 5.6 L will not work with a teleconverter as an AF lens; you will
need to set it to manual focus mode. 5.6 is the current minimum aperture for
AF lenses; if you had the 70-200 2.8 you could use a 2X teleconverter or if
you had the 70-200 4 you could use your 1.4 teleconverter.
Don't know why the camera thinks it is still 5.6 with the 1.4 converter; the
100-300L is an older design and the Tamron may not be communicating properly
with the body.
It's not too late to find a 300 4L you could put the Tamron on it for a 420
5.6!

Subject: EOS 100-300mm f5.6L with Tamron 1.4x SF AF
Hello,
I have an A2E and I just bought a 100-300mm f5.6L lens with a Tamron
1.4x SF AF tele-converter. With the tele-converter on, the AF seems
quite confused. Sometimes it finds the correct focus and other times,
the noisy non-USM lens just goes back and forth from minimum to
maximum focus.
Also, the largest aperture without the converter is 5.6. When I put
the converter on the largest aperture is still 5.6 not 8.0.
Does anyone one have advice or experience with these issues? I plan
to go to Kenya in late December/January and I hope to get some good
photos.
Charles
